John hears from Housing Trust residents put the heat on Housing Minister to cut prepaid meter costs

On Friday, John met Vale of Aylesbury Housing Trust Chief Executive, Matthew Applegate, who handed him over 1,300 Trust residents’ protest letters to new Housing Minister, John Healey, which urge him to help remove the extra premiums that apply to pre-pay meters. This follows the Trust’s eighteen month long campaign to put pressure on the energy companies to reduce their high profit making charges on pre paid energy meters.

John pledged to make sure the Housing Minister takes up their cause saying, “Some of the stories I have heard from tenants are truly shocking and represent the abuse of some of the most vulnerable people in our society. The idea of the meters is that they enable people to manage their money. In practice, people are losing out.

I pay tribute to the work of the Vale of Aylesbury Housing Trust and the National Housing Federation in spearheading the campaign. I am determined to raise this issue and to press for an equitable, and prompt, solution.”
