Speaker John Bercow backed the victorious Commons team in the annual Lords v Commons Tug of War competition last week.

The competition took place on Tuesday 8th June in the beautiful setting of Westminster Abbey’s College Gardens and raises money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Last year £98,000 was raised, this year organisers are hoping to raise £130,000, which could pay for three Macmillan Nurses, fund five Macmillan benefits advisers or allow 3,000 people to reach Cancerline-telephone helpline.

The event is backed by corporate support from Taylor Wimpey and BAE Systems.

John said:
“After losing last year, it was great to beat the Lords team this year and return the trophy to its rightful place. It is an excellent event which raises a very large amount of money for Macmillan.”
